A major enhancement to ChatGPT will make the AI chatbot easier to use.
OpenAI's ChatGPT now redirects AI.com. The domain was bought in 2021 but didn't resolve until this week.
Jeffrey Gabriel of Saw.com, a renowned domain trader, told Mashable more. Gabriel brokered the 2010 record-breaking sale of Sex.com for $13 million.
Gabriel could not confirm AI.com's buyer due to the sale's terms, but the dialogue left little room for interpretation. Other possibilities, like that someone gave OpenAI a multimillion-dollar favor, are unlikely.
OpenAI hasn't responded to Mashable's request to confirm it bought the name.
Gabriel stated that a domain "like" AI.com would sell for over $10 million in today's market. Gabriel acknowledged that AI.com was listed at $11 million before the acquisition.
Once Gabriel started brokering AI.com, he received regular offers.
"Every week, someone was offering 100 thousand, 200 grand, a million bucks," he claims.
Gabriel believes Amazon wanted the domain for its next Amazon Internet product rather than an artificial intelligence-based one. But, the e-commerce giant declined the domain. Gabriel notes that when approached about the area, AI-focused businesses like Nvidia and Intel showed no interest.
"Selling names like these to business leaders is exciting," Gabriel remarked. "They usually don't want or can't afford them. To gain sector leadership, smaller companies need to make an impression or accomplish something remarkable."
"I don't know if [the buyer] required it," he added. "It'll cement that product's lead. Right? Other companies take 10–20 years to get this buzz and use."
Two-letter.com domain names are industry holy grails due to their rarity and brevity. All 676 combinations have been previously registered, thus the only way to get one is to pay a premium on the aftermarket. NameBio and DNJournal, two organizations that track public domain purchases, report that even the most random two-letter.com combination has sold for at least $100,000 during the previous decade. IT.com sold for $3.8 million last year.
